what about a game like wheel of fortune? you could make a board with little clips on it to hold notecards. clip the cards for the puzzle (one letter on each card of course) up with the blank side facing out. Have the kids choose a letter and flip it. The first one to solve gets a point or a treat, etc. You could put the kids in teams for this also.

What about a crossword puzzle? we used to do this all the time when I took spanish, french and latin.

We also did a lot of work in latin up at the chalk board. We would be in teams. One person from each team would go to the board. The teacher would give a list of words out load and the first team to write down the correct translation or spelling (depending on the instructions) would get a point. Team with most points wins a prize...bonus points on next test, some candy, etc.

Sets of photos (similar but not identical), give one to each student and then put the photos on the wall. The students describe their photo and the other students have to guess which photo is being described.

Sets of pictures (very different types) - the students take one at random and the first starts 'I had a dream...' and incorporates what they see in their photo - they end with 'and then..' and the next student goes on.

Do a listening script from a book with some of the students reading the parts. The rest of the class do the exercise.

Gett each of the students to talk for 2 minutes on 'The first time I....'

Do a survival exercise - you'll find one at:

Get the students in groups to make up crosswords and then the other groups have to do them

Hope these help

I always love the story-telling. You can do a lot with one story. In the beginning, teach/explain the main "vocabulary" to students. "Brainstorm"-ie. what's characteristic of prince,dragon... "Listen" to the story. Give them set of pictures and re-organize the story. You can do the same thing again, but with set of different level of short/long sentence. Question and Answer. Matching Game. TPR-Role Play. Essay Writing (well, you can ask them to write any topic, ie. rewrite/retell the story, or change to different ending...), project research...wa...so many things you can develop from a story...But choose a story with appropriate level for different studets. Always have a main objective---what students can learn from the story and the activities you planned. good luck!
