in normal driving you probably want to keep the car around 2000 rpm , however, during acceleration you're going to want to rev the engine a lot higher than that - so during slow driivng you want to shift at 2000 to 2500 rpm but during hard acceleration you can pull it all the way to the red line.

This depends entirely on the car you're driving. I drive a Z3 and normally shift between 4000 and 5000 rpm. Every once in a while I'll run it out to 5500-6000 rpm but not very often, usually when trying to pull into traffic. My redline is around 6500-7000.

It depends on what you want to maximize.

Fuel economy - shift gears as low as you can without lugging the engine in the next higher gear.

Engine life - shift about 3000-3500 rpm.

Acceleration - shift close to the redline.

The wallet belonging to the guy who rebuilds your engine - wind it out all the way to redline.

If you have a tach, you can rev it up to the redline, if need be. I tend to shift at higher rpm's in the lower gears, and the higher the gear, the lower the rpms. That gives me better acceleration.

Depends on the car and engine. Check the specs on your engine and see where the torque/horsepower peaks. That's a good point to shift.

Yes, it is ok, 3500-4000 sounds right.

As long as you don't red-line it, it should be okay.

I've owned two cars that had manual transmissions.

JUST LISTEN TO YOUR CAR AND IT WILL TELL YOU WHEN TO SHIFT. YOU DON'T EVEN NEED TO LOOK AT THOSE NEEDLES.
