My heat pump has died after 16 years. I have been given 3 options for a replacement: a. another heat pump wilth a higher SEER; b. replace with gas; or c. a split system which would include a heat pump and a backup gas furnace. Has anyone ever used the split system? What is your opinion? Our neighborhood has only had gas installed during the past 2years. Therefore, only a few people have it, and no one that know. I could use your input. Thank you.

If you could get gas (Natural) go for it. In the long run it would be a much more efficient system As a split system than a heat pump.

It depends on the climate where you live. I live in Houston, TX so a heat pump is fine. If you have cold winters, a gas furnace is great. Gas is cheaper to operate than an electric furnace.

I have the split system but I could do with just a heat pump.

i have seen many split systems with gas emergency heat..if it is installed correctly can give you the same life as your old unit....most split systems are heat pumps with either electric or gas emergency heat...... i have seen very few self contained heat pumps in our area
