Well, first of all, you will bleed for several weeks after you give birth, like having a really heavy period. That is called lochia.

Then, depending on whether or not you breastfeed, you may not get your period for several months. I didn't get mine for 8 months.

BUT, don't let that fool you. Many women think they can't get pregnant while breastfeeding, and use that as a birth control method, and end up getting pregnant. Someone in my family did that, and now they have 2 babies very close together. So, be careful!

If you are breastfeeding you may not start until you have completely stopped breastfeeding. If you are not breastfeeding probably around 6 weeks. My best friend lost her baby at birth, so she obviously didn't breastfeed. She had the normal after birth bleeding for about 6 weeks, the last week it was her period. She had cramps and a heavier flow. But good luck getting regular again. My daughter is 15 months and I still don't know when to expect my period. Congrats on the baby!!

I'm not a doctor, but I can tell you from my own experience and that of friends and family. Menses commences four to six weeks after delivery. If mother is breastfeeding baby, usually menses ceases until breastfeeding is stopped. Are you planning on breast feeding?

There is no way to accurately predict when your period will resume. If you are not breastfeeding, your period will probably resume within four to six weeks after the birth of your baby. If you are breastfeeding, your period may not resume for three months or longer. Remember, you can still become pregnant! Some mothers don't begin menstruating again until after they have weaned their baby from nursing. When your period does begin again, it may be heavier than normal for a while.

Every woman is different. It can be as soon as 2 months after the baby is born if not breastfeeding or if you breastfeed, it can take YEARS. For me, I usually don't get it back til 1 month after I stop breastfeeding completely.
