In America words used to hurt, but now they just
piss people off and that is why there are so many
problems now.

A little rhyme said over and over until you believe it.
Words hurt if you let them,
which is the reason to repeat the little ditty.
Imus's words probably hurt because over and over it was said that they should hurt. The people he referenced did not hear the words said nor did most of the people who called for his head. .His style has always been about making jokes about pople. Insults notwithstanding. Hate is a word used too loosely. Every insult doesn't necessarily come from hate.
The Duke students could not walk away from the words. Their lives were literally on the line. .

I agree about Imus. He should never have been fired. But trying to make a connection to the Duke students is a stretch. It wasn't words that got them in trouble. It was accusations of rape from a Black woman. Sure, both had a racial component, but Imus' "sin" was purely verbal, the Duke students' alleged crime was much worse. It was just exacerbated by the woman being black and the students being white. And then there was an out-of-control DA who was trying to make a name for himself at the expense of the students.

Weither it is true or not, it's not sticks and stones we have to fear, but blacks who feel they have been slighted. I think it is time that we stopped catering to them just because they are a minority. What happened to Imus was a shame, considering what he said wasn't even a racist comment. Slanderous may be, but far from racist. Knappy is an adjective that desrcibes a type of hair, which can be applied to someone of any race. A ho can also be of any race! If the team would have been white, and he would have said bleach headed bimbo's nothing would have been done. Besided much worse is said in this country everyday and nothing is made of it. It makes me sick, that we bend over backwards in this country for minoritys. The rules should be applied equally for all people, not exceptions to be made for people who feel they are special.

I agree with you words can hurt you. I heard a woman say one time that she was emotionally abused by her husband. She said his words hurt her so much she wished he would physically beat her and get it over with. We need to think before we speak. I know this is easier said than done because none of us can really control our tongue perfectly.
But we need to try because words do hurt. In my life time I have heard some words that hurt my feelings to the point of tears. I'm 6 foot 5 and a big guy and yes I cried. So we need to think more of others and have empathy for others.

Words may not be able to hurt you physically, but trust me there have many times a hurtful word stings much longer than any cut or broken bone. People need to think longer before they speak.
