Bettas are quite peaceful and make excellent tank mates for most other fish that won't bother the betta. Most live bearers like mollies, platys and guppies are fine, many small to medium sized community tetras make good tank mates for bettas and several of the smaller barbs like cherry barbs, checkerboard barbs and gold barbs. All of the small catfish such as cory catfish are fine, just don't select a catfish that will get large enough to eat the betta.

I am keeping bettas with Wild guppies, Zebra Danios, Corys, and Black Neon Tetras. Also some of the tanks have Ghost or Cherry Shrimp and Olive Nerite Snails.

Please ignore anyone who says males can't be kept with other fish, they are usually wrong. Have you gone to petco and see the MALE bettas in the community tanks? They can go with other peaceful, but avoid the following.
Fin Nippers- Like barbs and some tetras
Other Bettas- Males will fight other males, breeding is quite complicated
Fish With Long Tails- Any fish that has a long flowy tail like guppies or long finned blue danios will be threatened by your betta
Aggressive Species- Like cichlids or other aggressive non community tank species
Goldfish- Despite all these myths, goldfish are COLD WATER fish, therefore shouldn't live with WARM WATER fish
FISH TO KEEP WITH BETTAS
-corydoras cats (fun and playful, keep in groups of at least three, not tolerant to salt, consider scaleless species gow between 2-3")
- platies ( keep in a 1 male to 3 female ratio or just get only females grow between 2-3")
- dalmatian mollies (keep in the same ratio as above, or just get only females grow between 2-3")
- otocinclus (get at least 2, eat both types of algae, grow to be 1.5")
- neon or cardinal tetras (get at least 3 of one species, grow to about 1-1.5")
- danios (different types include pearl, leopard, zebra, and gold, grow between 1.5-2.5", get at least 3)
AQUATIC SPECIES TO KEEP WITH BETTAS
- dwarf African frogs (can be difficult to get to eat, prefer sinking food, I would get 2 at least, grow to 1.5")
- ghost shrimp (I think they are fun to watch, easy to care for)
Hope this Helps
Thanks for Giving Your Betta a Nice Sized Aquarium, I currently have 2 10 gallon and 1 5 gallon betta tank, one had cories, but they were moved to a larger tank so they could school.
Remember, 1" of fish per gallon, so 10-3= about 7"-8" of fish to get.
Have Fun With You Fishy Friends! :0

Tetras, Rasboras, Danios and Plecos. These are perfect as tank-mates for a male betta.

You shouldn't keep a male betta with any fish with flowing fins like fancy guppies, or any fin nippers such as barbs. Other peaceful community fish will be just fine with them.

rule of thumb:
nothing larger
nothing of equal size
nothing colorful
nothing "pretty"
nothing with large fins
nothing with flowing fins
sooo basically you need a small, dull colored, boring fish...
When I talked to the manager at Petco, they told me to get Zebra Danios (small community fish come in groups of 3 or 4)
and they even suggested an African Dwarf Frog (light in color, comes in three sizes, get the smallest available, and even though it looks cool like a frog it's really an aquatic frog sooo you treat it just like a fish---low matainance)
I have a ten gallon tank with one male betta, 4 zebra danio, and one african dwarf frog---they have all lived peacefully for 5 months now....I suggest talking to a store worker or just grabbing a book on bettas in the store and flipping to the compainion section -you don't have to buy the book just walk through the fish section with it and see what you like, check the book then check the tanks...have fun!!

You can keep other fish with him as long as they aren't fin nippers. I suggest corycats, white mountain minos and other peaceful fish. You can also keep it wiht most livebears such as Platys. I keep mine with an African Dwarf Frog. They get along swimmingly.
