Is it okay to breast pump a few weeks before my baby is due? I've heard that pumping may stimulate contractions.

Here is something I found for you!

Nipple Stimulation to Self-induce

This is a practice often recommended by midwives when a woman is long past due or when labor is stalled. Nipple stimulation causes the release of oxytocin, the same hormone that causes uterine contractions. Many women report, however, that the contractions produced from this method are much stronger and more painful than natural labor, but are not any more effective. Please note: In order to use this method for induction, you must stimulate the nipples for long periods of time. The usual recommendation is 15 minutes of continual stimulation on each nipple each hour for several hours. So, the amount of stimulation you may experience during intimacy, while nursing an older child, or while pumping your breasts while pregnant will not cause you to go into labor. The general recommendation on these activities is to abstain from them when your condition warrants doctor recommended pelvic rest. Please check with your practitioner before trying this.

It is a bad idea. Pumping will cause contractions and can put the baby at risk for preterm labor. In addition, you will only be getting colostrum and your baby only needs that for the first few days after birth that your body will produce it. After that, the baby will need real milk which your body will then start producing. You will gain nothing, your milk won't be worth saving and you will just cause problems for yourself and the baby. Your body is set to respond to the baby's needs so you need the baby to make everything work well together.

I don't recommend pumping until after the baby is born. It is not the most fun thing to do, leave it until the baby needs the milk.

don't do it. stimulating the breasts before the baby is born can cause you to go into labor. It produces a hormone that makes your uterus contract.

yes it will and frankly you arent producing good milk. you are producing colostrum right now. that will do for the first 6 hrs. but then your body will let the good milk come down for the baby. so breastfeeding is unnecessary at this point. if you think you can stock it, dont.

I believe your body doesn't produce milk until pospartum. Initially collastrum and then milk will come. But check w your ob/gyn.

ya but unless your over due why? or if you are, you don't need to pump, just stimulate your nipples with your hands or better yet have your man do it, thats what the DOC told me
