well there "alternative rock" but same diff in a way, I would recommend the band "Saliva" there good, good songs "ladies and gentleman", "click click boom", and more

From the 1970s, for something relatively unknown, I'd recommend Katy Lied by Steely Dan or Siren by Roxy Music. Very sophisticated, stylish melodies.
You might also try some Elton John albums - he was much more than his singles. Captain Fantastic is particularly good - lots of great album cuts.
