This is the year that the new type of ALDL connector and the full implementation of the Tech2 scanner came into being. You can use the Tech1 scanner, but you need the adapter and another reading cartridge. You cannot use any jumping methods to read any codes on these anymore. Best thing to do is to go to a dealer and ask them to read the codes or go to a shop that has some of the same equipment and get them to read the codes. We used to do this for nothing, but some places might charge. Good luck.

At WalMart, a Ford scanner is like 35 bucks, the GM one, I believe last time I checked was more than 100. Why I don't know. I guess you could be a little unethical, buy it, read the codes and return it. After all, WalMart's known for mispricing, mistreating employees and not being a very good team player. Still, I wouldn't do that.

Some auto parts stores will hook up a scanner to your car for free. They will only request that you personally push the button to clear the code. I understand that you have something like 200 miles before the code leaves the computer. so, once that light comes on, you should have it scanned as soon as possible.

Remember, just because they read and get a code doesn't mean that they can go out and fix it. I've seen situations where the code didn't solve the problem. This was fuel related and a real tough problem. There's a device under the hood that isn't the fuel pump but helps pressurize the fuel, it went bad and caused the car to drive like a standard rather than an automatic. If you took your foot off the gas, the RPMs dropped to idle. I didn't complain too much as gas mileage went up to unbelievable 30 and 32 and the car was rated at much lower 24/26. But I documented that over and and over again. I once got 35 mpg on the highway with the air on. That happened only once.
