Really depends on the rose. Some get quite large and need very strong stupport. Others are more delicate. Always error on the side that your plant will become a monster and need the support.

Maintenance is an issue. Painted trellis need repainting every few years. Plastic trellis turns brittel after a few years in the sun and cold weather. Metal trellis is hot! So whenever possible, think wood, unpainted or stained.--leaving redwood or cedar.

I have a beautiful trellis and arch that I have roses on. Thy are made out of the same plastic as pvc pipe. They have a lifetime guarantee and look very nice. They also have no maintenance and don't fall apart. Go on line and type trellis or arches and you will see the different types and exactly what I mean. I love mine. A big car dealership bought 30 of them in town. The have bougainvillea on theirs. It looks gorgeous!
