I was having my Harley dyno'd the other day after doing some upgrades (I'm up over 72 hp now!) and my buddy decided to stick his Sportster on the dyno. The bike is a completely stock 2001 with 3,200 miles on it, and runs like it always has. When it was put on the dyno, it came out at only 32 horsepower. I had thought the stock hp ln these was about 45, but the speed shop owner insisted that although the 45 hp # is what you see listed all the time, in reality the Sportster always tests in the 30s. Does this sound right or do he need to go get it tested on a different dyno?

32 sounds about right. The 45 hp is probably at the crank. You generally lose some due to friction at the wheel. The good news though, is that it doesn't matter anyway since you own a Harley. It automatically makes guys think your unit is 8 inches longer than it is. It's the best male aphrodesiac going!

dyno's can only measure at the wheel, and that can rob hp ur trying to find. the actual hp produced is at the crankshaft. what's the big deal? it goes from point a to b and back in 1 piece doesnt it? it will still outpace dam near any car on the street wont it? still way more manuverable than an idiot in a car isnt it? only thing high hp will do is either get u a big ticket, or an easy way to kill urself.
stock bikes wont have exceptionally high hp figures anyway. only thing that high hp really matters, is on the track. is this sporty being run on the track? it wont matter on the street.

is it a 883 or 1200? 32 would sound about right it its a 883 maybe a little low for a 1200. Harleys are about torque and coolness I would not worry about it if it runs out okay.

Sounds about right for RWHP on a dyno. Harleys have more torque than they do horsepower.

My dresser is pushing 87HP and 90+ ft lbs of torque. 32 sounds awful low. Maybe he just needs to ride it more. It is barely broke in after 6 years. Heck, I've had my dresser for 2 months now and I have 2300 miles on it. RIDE IT!!

That can't be right, a stock Harley can not produce that kind of hp. It must be modified to the max.

Your buddy's got a 6 year old cycle with only 3200 miles?
He doesn't need to worry about HP. He's not riding it!

The 32 HP may be correct. The fact that you have a friend is what I find hard to believe.

ever notice that harley generally does not advertise horsepower ratings. they always talk about torque. the people running the test know what they are doing. i would believe their explanation.

hey 'clutch'. i'm sorry your 'unit' is only an inch long!!
