I'm afraid that 'clicking' noise is not uncommon in rats from petshops. Rats are prone to respiratory problems - that clicking sound is her snuffly breathing.

Now don't panic, this doesn't mean your rat isn't going to live a good life. This is manageable with meds from the vet - rodents meds are not expensive.

Breathing problems in rats flare up in times of stress - like going to a new home. Take the rat to the vets, they can give you antibiotics and mucolytics (to clear the airway) until this bout has gone away. You will probably need to use these meds whenever the rat has a flare up of this problem.

A friend of mine had this problem with her new rats, they were making 'chicken' noises, We thought it was just cute (I wasn't a nurse at the time!) until we thought we might get it checked by a vet and found out what it was. The rats lived decent lives though, they just needed the meds every so often.

This is a bummer, not a disaster, and it is common. If I were you I'd take the vet receipts to the pet store and try to get compensation - you probably won't get anywhere, but if enough people did this it might encourage pet shops to sell better stock.

Oh and don't use cedar or pine bedding - can be toxic, doesn't help their lungs.

I would say your rat is bruxing also, this is a sound that can mean a variety of things but I wouldn't think your rat is ill in this case. It doesn't sound like respitory illness to me personally.

All rats brux and I love the sound, for mine it usually means they are happy and cuddly.

Keep an eye on her. Make sure she's eating ok.

Is it it's teeth? He could be bruxing. It can mean that he's happy (kind of like purring) or agitated. Look at this website so that you can learn more about rat body language.

Is she chewing? What are you feeding her? Is she chewing on her bedding?
Check and see if she feels warm to the touch. Is she still as active or more active than when you brought her home?
Check with the people you bought her from.
