Yes it tells the insurgents, "terrorists" etc when we are leaving, but doesn't it ALSO tell the Iraqi government when we are leaving? Doesn't this force the Iraqi government to get their act together?

One of the main reasons that is that Iran is poised and ready to pounce on and take over Iraq as soon as we leave. The Iraqi's need to be able to defend themeselves from such an attack. If we set a timetable for withdrawal, the Iranians would simply bide their time until we left, and there is no guarantee that the Iraqi army will be sufficiently prepared by then.

If we set a deadline for withdrawal, you can mark my words that we will end up returning to Iraq fighting a much more dangerous Iranian army.

The Iraqi government will fall as soon as we leave. The place will erupt into civil war. Which is okay as long as we, with the help of it's neighbors, secure Iraq's borders so outside influences like Al Qaida can't influence the results of the Iraqi Civil War. That is how we must use diplomacy.

The Sunni and Shia want to fight each other in Iraq, they've wanted it for decades and suppressing that anger isn't going to do anybody any good. We might as well let them get it out of their system.

After centuries of dictatorship and being told what to do and how to do it, do you honestly believe that giving these people a timetable is the fair thing to do?

Look how long it took to form the 13 original colonies in the U.S. The road to independence takes longer than a few years.

I don't have the answer, but will say that I feel as though we're letting down a lot of people including ourselves. We're vulnerable now and we'll be much more so if and when we pull out.

Why not ask the 100,000 Kurds who disagreed the the old Iraqi government when we should cut-n-run?
Oh. I forgot they'll all dead, by the WMDs that Bush lied about.

Of course setting a time table is wrong! Those poor insurgents, "terrorists", etc want to kill us all and they must be stopped.

it ALSO gives the congress a reason to put pressure on the president to leave before the job is done. We are making progress over there, no matter what you may hear on the news. Have you ever seen a news show with soldiers that think this war is going nowhere? probably. But do you know how many thousands of soldiers they had to sift through to find the ones who agreed? probably not. The iraqi government is slowly but steadily getting its footing. Germany is still not recovered from their little episode. Dont think that we'll be done soon.

Would you prefer an open-ended conflict without end?

Year after year, after year, for the next 50 years...doing the same thing over and over and over...?

Wittling down our military to practically nothing in 10 years and having only a token force that is completely inept and unable to do much of anything?

Let me say this: If Gore had been PRESIDENT and he did what Bush did, the Republicans would be DEMANDING that we withdraw from Iraq!

It's not 'wrong' in any moral, ethical or legal sense, it's just foolish from a strategic standpoint. It tells what allies we have managed to gather that they will be abandoned, it tells enemies that they only have to hold out for so long to achieve victory, and it tells those who have tried to remain nutral which side is going to win, and when (and, it's generally prudent to back the winner).

Of course, whether it's vetoed or not, the very fact that it was debated does similar 'damage' - it signals that the American 'will to fight' is nearing exhaustion.

Yes. It's true the Iraqi goverment needs to be told their time is running out but you do not set a date because you watch, if the demo's get their way on a set date the terrorists are going to sit back and wait it out. In fact the terrorists even told us that is what they will do!!

It's not wrong. Bush needs to dump his ideologues and get some more pragmatic advisers. Establish what victory really is and let the military do their job, with specific dates set into their operations orders. Then get out of their way.
