This is a problem that occurred for several reasons-

- diet is either low in calcium, or high in phosphorous

- little or no vitamin D3 in the diet (from vitamins or red meat, or UVB rays from the sun

- dirty water, small tank, cold temps add to stress and complicate the problem.

To fix this:

1. Read up on basic cares at a site like http://www.redearslider.com

2. Start with a very clean tank

3. Immediately begin feeding a more balanced diet- high quality pellets and live or frozen/thawed 'fish foods' like shrimp, krill, worms, bugs, snails, small fish, etc.

4. Try to use 'gut loaded' waxworms, earthworms, or crickets. These are bugs that have been fed on a calcium supplement and/or vitamin supplement before being given to the turtle. You can often buy them this way.

5. Get a lightbulb that offers UVB lighting. It will help produce D3 in the turtle's skin that will help metabolize calcium.

6. Once the habitat and diet are under control, the turtle should start to recover, but it will be a longish process and it will be suspetible to infections, etc. in the meantime. Keep the stress as low as possible- no handling, noise, vibrations, etc.

i like complicated, yet once I fry them I pull the middle of the shell out of the oil speedier so the backside flexes and does not wreck. so they get softer the farther down. style of a hybrid taco.

Calcium and proper diet.

Have a vet look at him while you're at it.
