Whenever I play in front of people, I freeze up and can't play as good as I do at home by myself. Tomorrow is my first time playing in a competition. How can I stay calm and just play as well as I can?

Think calm thoughts, don't think about the competition. Think about how well you play at home. Picture yourself playing the same way and even better at the competition - fill your thoughts with this. Believe me, if you think and visualize it, it will be so. Be and think positive thoughts even as you sleep. Fall asleep thinking it, wake up with the same thoughts and keep them in your head right through to the competition. I have faith in you, you'll be great!!!

Positive Thinking is my life long motto and has served me well throughout. When you get a chance pick up a copy of Dr. Norman Vincent Peal's book - The Power of Positive Thinking - it changed my life and I hope it does yours.

If you can play your recital piece -- not just from memory -- but internalized, then you'll be OK. Internalized means that you can play the piece with your hands/fingers/pedals without even thinking about it -- like your body is on auto-pilot. If you can do that then you can start thinking about other things while your are playing away -- pleasent things like going out with friends. It's like you're thinking, "what's for dinner", or "I forgot to text my buds", while your fingers are playing all by themselves.

Unfortunately, internalizing a song takes a lot of time. I can internalize some short songs in as little as a week (at least 1 hour /day), but it might take you longer. If you already have your song memorized, play it over and over for about an hour tonight.

If you *don't* have your song memorized, then try and do that tonight -- that will help tremendously with your nerves tomorrow.

Good luck.

Whenever I'm in a competition, I like to take an hour(or as long as you need) to psych myself into it, don't think of it as being judged, but they are all fans and friends, they want you to do well. Tell your self that it's not big deal! and when you are there, try to block everything else from your senses. It is just you and your piano, in your room...no one is paying attention, or hears you. Keep telling yourself this stuff and you will start believing it! Trust me!
When it's over you will feel a rush when people clap, and the fear will be all gone! No worrys, good luck!

wow, im writing a term paper about how people shoul approach towards a work with a positive attitude. and maybe this will help but, i would just relax, take couple of deep breaths, and just dont worry about it that much. you know what, just listen to that song called "dont worry be happy" i do that sometimes when i have to go infront of the class and give a conference style thing. just be yourself, dont worry about it too much. its just a competition. go crazy! live life like theres no tomorrow. do what you have the best. hope it goes well.
