I am having trouble finding a way to babyproof the bottom of the stairs so the baby can't climb upstairs. My staircase has a full wall on one side, but is open on the other side on the first four steps. It seems to me a traditional baby gate wouldn't work since it needs anchored at all four corners, any suggestions?

I absolutely agree with the poster who recommended onestepahead.com. They have some great gates that would work....they may not be pretty but they would keep your little one safe!!
My staircase is like that as well. The top was fairly easy to install a gate, but we had to add add a 2 x 2 in order to make it sturdy and then also had to put a net railing up along the railing to keep the twins from going through or throwing stuff down the stairs.
At the bottom we can put a pressure gate up and it will keep the kids from going up the stairs, but they will soon figure out how to just pull it down with a little bit of pulling.
They know how to go up and down the stairs so I am teaching them how to do so safely.

We had a house like that. We went and bought several 2x2s and anchored them to the wall near the ceiling with the bottom on the floor against the stairs. Then we mounted a gate to the second one up (so our little boys could practice on the first one). It was ugly, but every month we moved the gate up one stair so that the kids could practice safely going up and down and then when we hit the last exposed stair, we were able to get rid of the wood and put the gate up. We pushed a couch against the side of the stairs (they then learned to jump/climb onto it from the stairs). Good luck.

Our staircase is similar. We put a gate at the top of the stairs. I'm not sure how old your baby is, but I just kept an eye on my son when he was just crawling, but I think when he was 10 or 11 months I had him crawl up them with me and then showed him how to shimmy down them. I was surprised he picked it up so easily. But he has tumbled down a couple of steps onto tile once or twice, yikes! with not even a bump. Onestepahead.com has lots of gates and gadgets, you might want to see if something they have would help. Maybe you can put a gate after those 4 steps? or somewhere else in the room to keep baby from the stairs? good luck!

Check jcpenny.com or sears.com they have this amazing gates that bolts into the wall on one side and latches on to the other side. It is easy open for you but difficult for the little ones and would fit perfectly at the stairs. That's where I have mine. The gate I have is called Supergate 3 from sears. Those gates rock! Good luck!
