It is the USA's attempt to retaliate against a nation who had nothing to do with 9/11.

Originally, the President claimed we were invading Iraq because of a combination of illegal weapons of mass destruction and terrorist ties, and the factor of liberating the Iraqis from Saddam Hussein was added later. The evidence of WMDs that the Bush Administration presented has since been shown false, however, leading to questions about whether the country was misled intentionally. Further, many believe that the war was actually carried out to try to secure Iraq's oil reserve, which is one of the world's largest. Adding to these suspicions are the facts that oil company Halliburton received no-bid contracts to work in Iraq, and Bush, Cheney, and Rice were in the energy industry (Cheney as the CEO of Halliburton) previously.
In any case, the primary issue now is returning stability to the country, which has been racked by terrorist activity, destruction of infrastructure and massive cost to civilians, and resistance to the occupation.
The question of whether the United States can, or should be allowed to, continue to occupy the country, has led many Americans and the Democratic majority in Congress to call for withdrawal.

First, Spell checker not work with all I say so the dumb need not reply about spelling and I really not going to brain work to spell.
Well to be unbiased I tell you the scoop.
Many reasons behind war. Some being; Personal Gain, Democracy, One World Society, and to limit the male population for growth of population.
The reason Democracy fall into this is America has shown how this can benefit society as a whole and now other people of countries that not have want it. In actually their Government should, but, greed determines the out come.
Now, take North Korea as example. Here is an isolated country that the people, in fear, have to pay tribute to their ruler. True, he may do a few good things for them, but, in return he to be praised as a god. He takes of how foreigner technology are wrong, yet owns many vehicles from many countries and Videos of Movies. So, from this we see an example of what the people of Iraq were going through and they wanted to be people, human beings, unhindered in their abilities and contributions they could make for the world and their nation. Saddam, chose the route of N. Korea and oppressed people. Yet, he indulged in the very technology as Kim Jong Il of N. Korea does at the expense of the people. So, countries came together to try and stop this type of oppression in the world.
Now, what we see may be good and may be bad, but, the world is working toward a one world society the is governed by something like United Nations or European Union, where elceted officials from many Nations come together to make the world work in peace together. Eventually we will see a cashless society with one common currency. And those that oppose this change will be eliminated. Keep watching N. Korea, this the hot spot many not see. And China like them. ;-)
Now to close this; Because of oppressive nations in the past many intellegent people defected to the free world, this gave us the technology we have today, both war and social as in Medical and Indusrtrialization.
Many will say oil, well that very limited and in reality we know the oil would come in time as the Leader (Saddam) wanted money.
Now to answer your son so he not look at you like a nut;
It is a war to give people equal rights so they can chose their life and hopefully benefit lives of many others in the world as a whole.

well... as far as I'm concerned the war is all about oil. As you may know we produce virtually none of the oil we use (we import most of it). As Iraq is one of the leading 'producers' of oil we targeted them. That way when (and if) we win the war the Iraqi's
can 'repay' us in the form of LOTS and LOTS of oil. Although I think this may be the main reason there are other ones and with good intentions. Heres a list of why I think we are fighting:
1. Oil
2. Spread Democracy
3. Get rid of terrorists
4. liberate oppressed people(s)
5. install a stable government
6. help to make their lives more peaceful by giving them freedoms and choices in their lives.
7. Establish security and prosperity for the United States and other nations.

You know,It's hard to ask, maybe impossible. to as you say "describe" any war.
Description of war,any war ,is death ,destruction, horror and everlasting pain for several generations.
Some wars are unavoidable.
The war in Iraq was one of those that was avoidable.
Just step back and be objective, though it's difficult,if not impossible.

If I am not mistaken it was started after the way that the people were being treated by Saddam and so we tried to relief them. But then it escalated into what it s now because of all the terrorists.
