I've been hearing a lot lately about same sex marriage and how it's a heated debate in several states in America. Just wondering why, if two people love each other so much, that they have to make it legal to be together? I guess what i'm saying is why is it so imperative? America is built on freedoms, so why try to invoke something (the concept of two people being happy together) to something that inherently makes no sense (being bound together by law)??

then why would anyone get married?
Gays want to marry each other for the same reasons heterosexual couples want to get married...

Ok, you're obviously someone who's NEVER given any thought to having no rights or what it's like to fight for equality. You also have no idea of exactly what legally married couples are entitled to. Be glad YOU never have to know how rotten it is to not be allowed in to see your wife in the ER, or to handle their funeral arrangements or get custody of a child, or get the same tax refunds as a legally married couple or shared health benefits ot work.... It's nice when you can and tell people you ARE married, and it's not just a word they ignore. Being gay IS by nature - not by choice and there's nothing wrong or unhealthy about it. Homosexuals are not the creators of AIDS and homosexuals CAN reproduce. Gay people fall in love and deserve to be legally married.

I agree that getting a marriage license does not change the relationship. Living together as a monogomous and committed couple does, and people can do this without technically getting married. But what a marriage license is good for, obviously, is giving these couples the rights they deserve, rather than treating them as strangers in the eyes of the law.

I personally think the default should be civil unions for everyone, then marriage can be a religious or spiritual pursuit. The argument is about allowing gay or lesbian couples the same legal standing as heterosexual couples. Things like the right to decide final dispensation, medical decisions, insurance, the right to ensure that a partner's last wishes are respected, even if their family wants to deny them. The right to adopt.

because those idiots that made the laws concerning relationships and assets didn't make an exception for those that don't meet their criteria. i can spend all of my years along side my partner and put all my worth in everything me gain. if something happens to her or myself, one of us maybe left in the dirt. which means everything we had becomes the state. all because some guy wasn't there to claim it all. Marriage is more than a piece of paper. its a bond. a stated commitment of one another feelings and intentions. Its an acknowledgment. something with legal proof that can help along the way. because ignorance runs this country, this factor can't be acknowledged. which means more trouble for those that's trying to live a honest decent life as a HUMAN!

I don't think they'd have an issue with it, except for certain situations where they aren't able to be with their spouse because of silly rules. For instance, if their sig other went into the hospital, they may not be allowed to visit because they aren't "family" in a legal sense. They won't get married tax rates. They can't put a spouse on their insurance policy. If there weren't these sorts of unfair policies, I think that it wouldn't be such a big deal.

Same sex marriage must be legalized, on principle, we are all equal and our State must guarantee the same rights for everybody, done that, from then on what a person decides to do is a personal choice, but everyone must have the choice to decide if they want to marry or not

It is mainly so both will be equal in the sight of law. They are both responsible for any children. They each can answer for the other in critical hospital situations (leave a person on life-support, donate their organs). They both will be covered under a "family" medical insurance program. They both will be part of a person's pension. They both will be able to part of a person's Social Security pension.

They should never be able to get married. Its wrong in the sight of God and many of them are killing each other with AIDS. I pray that they will never get the same rights as heterosexual couples, they want rights and coverage for their despicable lifestyle. How can to men reproduce how can two covers cover, its not logical, its unnatural,. All you get from those relationships is diseases and confusion.wake up people.

I guess it's about having the choice to get married. Like any other heterosexual couple.
