I have a computer which will turn on, but for some reason, I can't get it to communicate with the monitor. I tried switching monitors and also the card which the monitor connects to. The monitors work when connected to my other computers, so I know that the problem isn't with them. I need to get my Favorites off of the computer which will not work. How can I go about doing that? Can I connect the motherboard somehow to another computer and use the other computer to access its files?

you cant connect the motherboard to another PC, but you can connect your hard drive to another PC.

When you put in the new video card, did you disable the onboard one on the bios so windows knows not to use it?

Well it is a bit unclear what the problem is. If nothing at all ever shows up on the screen (usually there is a dell or Gateway or whatever logo) when you first start, then your video controller is gone.

Except for the power light coming on, how do you know your computer is even booting up? Do you here the sound that Windows makes when you first start? If you do, then you know your computer is actually booting, and it is just the video.

You can get a video card and use that for the monitor instead.

However, if you don't even know if the machine is actually booting up at all, don't bother getting the card.

Easiest thing to do is find someone that can hook you hard drive up (either as a second drive or using an external enclosure) and try to copy that Favorites file.

There is two way.1 change the display card and use your same monitor,2 connect your hard disk to another computer as slave and access your favorite

If you can see the computer boot on the monitor initially, try entering into the computers BIOS. There is often a setting that allows you to change between your primary graphics adapter and in which order they are used. Ensure that it's set to the appropriate graphics card. This may help, if you can see the boot screen. Had this problem before.

Yes, there are ways to do that.

All you have to do is remove the hard drive from the broken computer and hook it up to a working computer.

Just make sure it is jumpered as a "slave". There should be some pins that have a little plastic piece covering two of the pins.

If you are not sure how to jumper it, either ask again here or do a google search for "how to jumper hard drive".

You did not mention what happened when you changed out the video card. Try that and see.

You can always take out the HDD on the broken machine, change the jumper to a slave, then connect it to a good system. The good system will see the slave drive, and you can transfer your favorites files folder by drag N drop.
