I am curious as to what is the bigest and most powerull model rocket that a private person can build in his own home and launch in a parking lot or park for fun.

Model Rocket (MR) Weight is a maximum of 1 pound. Motors use 4 oz or less of propellant.

Large Model Rocket (LMR) Are actually sort of a cross between model and high power. Weight is a maximum of 3.3 pounds. The motors use from 4 oz. to 4.4 oz of propellant. Anything more than 4.4 oz of propellant constitutes a High Power rocket.

High Power Rocket (HPR) Any size rocket using commercially available APCP or Hybrid motors from "H" to "O" power

Experimental Rocket (EXP) Any size rocket using APCP or Hybrid motors built by the rocketeer from "H" to "P" power

Amateur Rocket Any size rocket using any size or type of motor

It is called "The Big Mutha". It is 14 inches in diameter and 72 inches long. It has an aluminum solid fuel tank and a small version of a jet fighter engine that burns k-1 kerosene. It can't be launched from a straight up position. It has to be angled and launched on a metal track so it can build up speed before leaving the ground. It is remote controlled and has a 4 minute flight time and has a 142 inch manual deployed shoot. The Big Mutha kit cost $389.99 and can be ordered through Frigamale Industries. Call 1-800- YOU-FOOL. LOL Good luck on getting an answer.

That's hard to say, since many hard core model rocket hobbyists build their own custom rockets. You need a permit from the FAA and the local police if your rocket is above a certain size, as it is a hazard to aircraft, and people on the ground. Check with your local hobby shop to see what the zoning laws in your area allow.

You could also ask your local model rocket club:

The biggest ones available are D-engines. I believe you still need a license to fire off F-grade rockets and above.
Never make your own rocket motors unless you have an engineering degree and a death wish.

Fuel: about an ounce less than too much. Angle: Ummmmmm . . . 34 degrees from the horizontal, taking into account crosswinds, headwinds, tailwinds, and how much weight an African swallow can carry and at what rate. Should be fun! Good point, David! (lol)
