How many degrees does a clock make when it is 8:30 and how many does it make when it is 2:50?

By degrees I mean, the two clock handles - what angle do they form?

2:50= 120 degrees between the two hands


every 5 mins is counted as 30 degrees

At 8:30 the minute hand is on the six and the hour hand is half way between the eight and nine.

8.5/12 - 6/12 = 2.5/12 = 5/24

(5/24)*360 = 75°

At 2:50 the minute hand is on the ten and the hour hand is 5/6ths of the way from the 2 to the 3. Because we want the smaller angle it is helpful to think of 2 as 14 and 3 as 15.

(14 5/6)/12 - 10/12 = 89/17 - 60/72 = 29/72

some data we need to solve this problem.i calculate it below and i will use this result later in the problem
angle covered by the minute hand in 1 minute = 360/60 = 6 degrees
and angle covered by the hour hand in one minute = 360/(12*60) = 0.5 degrees
OK...... first let us do for 8 30
at 8 o clock the angle between them is 4/12 * 360 =120 degrees
in 30 min (i.e at 8 30 )
min hand covers 30*6= 180 deg and the hour hand covers 30*0.5=15 degrees.
therefore the angle between them at 8 30 =
(initial angle at 8 00) + ( angle covered by min hand in 30 min) - (angle covered by hour hand in 30 min) = 120+180-15
= 285 degrees.
but this is the obtuse angle( as it is > 180)
the required angle is 360-285=75 degrees

if you repeat the same procedure for 2 50....if u do it right you will end up with 145 degrees(it would be easy if u start at 3 00 and go back to 2 50)

Angle between hands of a clock = 30 H - (11/2) M


8:30 -----------

30x8 - (11/2)x30
= 240-165
=75

2:50............

30x2 - (11/2)x50
= 60-275
