a Fraction is part of a hole unit. cut an apple in four equal pieces : each piece is 1 of 4 of the whole so one piece is one fourth of the whole are a Quarter which is written as 1/4. 1/5 1s one part of 5 to make one whole. 1/8 is one of 8 to make a whole piece, and 11/8 is one whole piece and one part of eight more. To add subtract if base are alike just add or subtract the top numbers and leave the bases alone if different you have to make them a like. like 1/8 + 1/4= 3/8. 1/4 is 2/8 so 1/8+2/8=3/8. This should help some.
