Many of the kids who ask questions that are obviously straight out of a textbook can't spell and couldn't compose and punctuate a complete sentence if their lives depended on it. Maybe in their future lives they won't need to know when the Magna Carta was written or how to calculate the area of a triangle, but shouldn't they at least know how to find out? Never mind reading their books; they don't even use search engines. I got a Best Answer for telling a child to google something!
Are these people showing off or do they really think they're helping these kids? I don't get it. I just wish someone would tell them they're doing a lot more harm than good.

I'm sorry; apparently I explained myself poorly. I meant why do people do OTHER people's children's homework for them. I think parents helping their children with homework is wonderful. So is giving a child a hint on how to proceed. But, Jesse, my friend, you're deluding yourself if you think a child is going to figure out how to solve a problem. He's going to copy your answer letter for letter and turn it in without looking at it or learning anything. You could just as easily give him the wrong answer and he would turn that in.

Sorry about that.

Froggy, your answer is foolish personified. Who cares if they don't learn?? Who do you think is going to be running the world when you grow up? These very children who can't do simple math, are flunking science, and lack basic communication skills--and who are incapable of critical thinking, like you.
And in conclusion, I wouldn't presume to criticize someone else's grammar and punctuation until I proofread my own.

Boy! I sure agree with this question! I help a LOT up here, but I only start them on their way with a little research or perhaps edit some already written work. Occasionally I'll help someone find something very difficult or obscure.

I really have to take issue with Roger's answer. He missed the point. While using the Internet IS a great resource, and I do view it as the modern "library", coming up to Y-Answers and asking for pre-written papers, listing every math problem on their homework, or wanting us to write their essays is CHEATING!

Those of you who enable the cheaters do them NO GOOD. If a child asks a math question, help them by solving a similar one -- or just answer ONE out of the list. If it's a history question, give them a web site or two and let them do their own reading to discover the answer (has anyone noticed the kids now saying "No Links, give me the whole answer?").

And, something else I've noticed here -- like Wikipedia, except worse, answers on Y-Answers are not always right! Sometimes I'll correct them if I feel the student is truly doing their own work, but if they are just wanting us to do it for them ... nope, I just leave it.

Well for one thing, who cares if they don't learn. If they don't want to know how to get the right answer and learn something from it, it's their loss. Maybe they ask because they are too scared to ask someone they know, don't want to feel stupid asking, the teacher is not a good teacher, or they have tried to get the answer themselves but they know it is wrong. Maybe they are checking their answers to see if anyone else got the same answer as they did. Some people do show off, but some people are students themselves. They could be learning the same thing as another student and they just want to help a peer out. It is good that people are willing to help others. I do agree with what you said about kids not being able to make a sentence grammatically correct. Others should not help these kids if they are going to ask the question and it doesn't even make sense. Answering a question could harm, or it could help the kids. It just depends on the type of student.

Yes, I know how you feel, but when I post an answer, I try to completely explain myself so that the kids know how its done. So what if they got the answer from me, at least now they know hows its done and that will probably give them more confidence to do the work on there own later on.

I do not do my kids homework. If I did they wouldn't learn how to do it themselves. I help them out and check their work but if they make a mistake I erase it and tell them to redo it.
My son came home one day and said some of the kids had their parents do their homework. Whats the point of going to school? you asked a good question

Parents attempt to help there children but usually the work is done so late in the evening, since they work, that it tends to be easier to do it for them to save on the demanding task of waking them to get the work done.

But, mostly it is very frustrating to teach your own child. As a teacher I am unable to help my child with their work

I know this won't be popular but here it goes...
It's amazing how MANY people miss the whole purpose of homework.
It's all about using all available resources.
Is it cheating to look up the correct book in the card catalog?
Is it cheating to look up key words in the Index?
Is it cheating to go to the library (a source of knowledge) to find your answers?
Has ANYONE used ANY of those individual answers in their everyday life? No...It's only to jump thru hoops to get that diploma.
It's the 21st century and today's library is the internet.
