The family name would refer to the trade of a person. For example, the last name Smith would be like a blacksmith.

In Sweden, the last names are the father's name with son attached to the end.

If your dad's name was Peter, you became Petersson.

If your name was Sven, and you had a son his last name would be Svensson.

Of course, that got to be very confusing and now people stick with just one family name.

In Poland the ending "ski" means son.

It's the same with some Russian and Eastern European families. They all have the son ending.

The last name usually refers to some trait of the ancestor, such as a job or parent.

No one really invented it. You can't go back quite that far.
