I have a 2 month old son who has been on zantac for reflux for 5 days now it does seem to have helped a little with his fussyness/gassyness/crying during and after feeding but I have noticed increased spitting up. He will only sleep on my shoulder or in my arms during the night , once I put him in the bassinet he moves all around and sleeps only for about an hour as I think he is uncomfortable. I went to the doctor today and he recomended adding rice cereal 1 scoop for every 1 ounce of formula. Has anyone had luck with this?

First off Gripe Water is used for babies with colic not reflux it is not the same thing. Colic has to do with gas and reflux has to do with heartburn not the same thing so this will not help. I had three of them with GERD and this was also recommended to me by my children's ped. It helps the formula stick to the ribs helping to reduce the amount of food that refluxed into the esophagus. This definitley helped my kids, of course this along with the meds. My kids were also on the Zantac and all three of them grew out of it by the time they were 6 months old.

Actually yes, i put 1 tbsp to about 4 ounces of formula when i started is now up to about 2 tbsp for 6 to 7 ounces. My little one is six months now we started this around 3 months, its in her last bottle for the night. You might have to make sure you have nipple that will allow the cereal formula mixture to flow easy through it. But this worked great my little one has had no probably sleeping through the night now.

The only thing rice cereal does, in my opinion, is make them fuller, longer, making them sleep longer. That may be your doctor's logic behind it. It is heavier on the stomach, so they stay fuller longer, therefore causing them to sleep longer. If the gas is the problem, I can only tell you two words GRIPE WATER. You can get it from the local drug store. If you can find colic ease, that would be ideal, but I know of only 2 places that sell it, and I live in NC, and they are both here, but you can call and order it for them. Try feeding him out of a Dr. Brown's bottle. It has a ventilation system that keeps air from getting to his stomach and it worked for my son. I hope this helped

My doctor told me when my son was diagnosed with reflux that it was okay to give rice cereal because it was thick enough to keep down. I started him at 6 weeks and he is doing just fine now. He is four months old. He kept the cereal down and seemed to be fuller than with just the milk.

ABSOLUTELY!!!! My little girl was the same way. She could not take anything it seemed and she never slept! I tried breast milk, soy, hypoallergenic, you name it. I finally switched to Carnation Good Start Supreme and added the rice ceral and she did much better. I am not going to say that she did not get sick at all, or never got gas, but it was WAY better. you could also try Dr. Brown's Bottles, they prevent air and help with colic. I also gave my little girl a little bit of all natural chamomille tea (warm) after feedings. That seemed to soothe her as well. I hope you get some relief. I know it is hard.

My baby had HORRIBLE gerd. They don't reccommend any rice until 3 months because of allergies. Zantac worked well for my baby. Right now he is on Reglan and Pepcid, little to none spit up now. It's great!
