One night during some heavy stop and go traffic I smelled coolant really strong. I stopped to see if my 94 YZF750R was leaking but no liquid ever hit the floor. I just assumed it was another passing vehicle. Weeks later while messing around with my battery I noticed my coolant tank was empty. I filled it with water and rode it about one mile before it was bone dry again. Still no liquid on the ground no dripping. My oil is not milky or bubbly. I filled it up one last time and now the water stays in. I am scared to ride it now becasue if it's a blown gasket or head I don't want to sieze it.

The liquid has to be going somewhere, if the oil is fine and you see no leaking, it could be leaking into the combustion chamber (blown head gasket) and coming out the tailpipe as steam, OR, it could be leaking slowly when the engine heats up and it is dripping onto something hot an turning to steam. try looking for this, in the morning or sometime when it is real cold out, start the engine, and let it warm up (make sure it has coolant first!) and look for steam. a fair amount of steam for the first few minutes on a cold day is normal, if it continues to be blowing lots steam out the tail pipe after it is warmed up that could be your problem

Do you have an electric fan? Do the check that Greg suggests, and also check the operation of the fan.

If your fan was not working when you were in stop and go traffic, your coolant will expand and overflow through the vent on the radiator cap. You noticed the bottle empty later, after the engine had cooled. The remaining fluid in the tank would have already been sucked back into the block. If this was not enough to fill the block, the water you added would also be sucked in during your one mile ride. Your comment, "now the water stays in" leads me to believe this is the case. If you truly had a leak, it would not stay in - it would still leak.

Perhaps the bike was low on coolant in the first place, it over heated a bit, and you smelled coolant. Then eventually you filled the resevoir, but not the radiator, once the bike got warm it sucked the coolant out of the resevoir hence it was empty, it did it again to try to fill its own radiator.

Pull the spark plugs if one of them is really clean compared to the others then you may have a head gasket leak or a cracked head. Next time remove the radiator cap "while the motor is cold" and fill it. Then fill the tank to the lower mark and no more or it will leak out the over flow when hot. Please use anti freeze.

i have a bad feelin with this. 2x's u filled the tank, and it went dry real quick. that water went somewhere. if it isnt in the oil, did u check the primary? i'm wondering if the primary is part oil part water. i'd have the bike inspected from top to bottom cuz something sure as hell dont sound good.
