I have tried all types of formula. Soy and regular. She was working on the soy good start for a short time and now she is breaking out in hives. We've cut her off everything else she was eating for almost a week now and she just gets the hives worse after her bottle.

One of my friends told me she had the same problem with her child and she ended up having to replace formula with Gatorade. Anyone else have to switch to Gatorade? I take her to the doctors Thursday but I would like an answer before then. In case it matters she is 4 months old.

Use lactose. Or just breast-feed.

Gatorade will not substitute for formula. Are you using powdered or liquid formula and do you have to mix it with water? She may be allergic to something in your water or maybe even the latex nipple on the bottles. I'm allergic to chlorine so I can't drink city water. I break out in hives every time I take a shower. No fun. I landed in the hospital when I was a kid the first time I drank a glass of city water.

It may be the soap you wash her bottles in. It could be your perfume if she gets close to you when she's drinking from the bottle. It could be any thing. Allergies are nasty.

I wouldn't switch to Gatorade unless your doctor recommends it. You might try goat's milk thinned with a bit of water. Your doctor should perform an allergy test to find out what exactly is causing this reaction. Four months is WAY too long to wait to find a suitable formula.

Talk to a La Leche League Leader and/or a Lactation Consultant about relactating. If she can't tolerate formula, she needs more nutrients than Gatorade can provide. ALL a 4 mos old should be getting is either breastmilk or formula. Breastmilk is species specific and she should be able to tolerat it fine.

Hmmm. May be she is allergic to soy. I would try a hypoallergenic formula liek Allementum (sp?) by similac or Neutramogen(sp?). IF those have been tried or you try them and they do not work I woud try rice milk or goats milk with a teaspoon of Karo syrup to help with the taste. My niece had trouble and that is what we did. If non of that works for you, I would get her some pedialite until you see the doctor.

You need to have the RAST test done. With one tube of blood they can tell you with great accuracy what your daughter is allergic to, and you have to find out what it is before she gets into serious trouble.

I would call your pediatrician and tell them you need to get in right away, and that you need to have the RAST test done. You are playing with fire by this trial and error with her formula. It's dangerous. If it is a true allergy she could go into anaphylactic shock and that's not something you should take lightly.

My kids are allergic to everything. I have to carry Epi-pens for all of them. Having the Epi-Pen doesn't mean everything is okay, we still have to rush them to the ER afterwards and it's a huge ordeal. It's very upsetting to the child and to us parents.

FYI: food allergies don't usually produce rashes, they cause hives. Hives are a true allergic reaction. Her rashes could be from anything her skin comes in contact with like soap, lotion, shampoo or laundry detergent. I would insist on the RAST test to determine what she is allergic to.

I would also switch to dye-free, perfume-free everything for her. Dove unscented soap. "ALL" unscented laundry detergent is recommended #1 by dermatologists. Downy fabric softener comes dye-free, perfume-free.

Not only should you wash her things in the unscented stuff, but everyone elses too. All she has to do is be held by someone that wears any perfumes and she could develop a skin rash.

Eucerin makes unscented lotions and creams that we use on our kids starting at birth. All of her baby wipes need to be dye-free and perfume-free as well. We use Huggies wipes that have none of the allergans.

You need to eliminate as many contact allergies (skin allergans) as possible before you get into worse trouble with this little girl. Skin rashes can become inflamed, cracked and get infected so be sure you get all dyes and perfumes out of her world asap.

I would get in to see an allergist and the dermatologist for her asap. All of my kids have a very close relationship with our allergist and as part of their annual physicals they get the RAST test. It's very important to find out what they're allergic to so you can make informed decisions regarding the health of your baby.

Best of luck to you and your baby girl.
