1. Not only should you name be on the outside, but it on the INSIDE too. If you bag has no name on the outside, the lost baggage dept. opens it to look for id inside.
2. Put bright colored stickers or something on the outside to distinguish your bags from everyone elses.
3. Take off old baggage tags so the handlers won't screw up.
4. Don't check in really early. The handler's put the bags on next flight going to your destination, not necessarily your flight.
5. NEVER NEVER put anything valuable in your check in luggage. Thievery is rampant amongst baggage handlers, which should be to the airlines shame, but isn't.
6. Carry your absolute necessities with you, passport, meds, glasses, etc., in case you're without your bag a day.

Book non-stop flights. If this is unavoidable, make sure you book with sufficient time between flights. (I have lots of flying experience, with more than my share of lost luggage. The number one reason the luggage didn't arrive was it didn't make it onto a second flight. Many times, I predicted my luggage wouldn't arrive because of the short turnaround time. Once it wasn't time, it was the plane already had too much luggage, so when we transferred our luggage didn't fit on board)

Get there early. So that if you run into delays and check in line ups, there still is a decent amount of time to get your luggage on the flight.

Well tagged, easy visible, not too heavy, not too much luggage all helps.

Just in case, keep a description of your luggage in your carry on. Include brand, colour, style, size. Keep necessities and consider a change of clothes in your carry on also. Normally luggage is delivered to you by the next day.

Tag the bag. Also, don't pack large bags, pack smaller ones, since the airline people might not want to put a big heavy bag on the plane. Also, if you fly on small planes, its more likely your bag will get lost.
Another thing, carry a change or two of clothes in your carry on, so if your luggage does get lost, at least you will have something to change into.
