I just bought a new PCI-E X16 card and after installing the drivers and restarting all I see is a red square on the screen. I have to plug into my onboard graphics to use my computer. What could this be?

Try this:

-Click START
-Select RUN
-Type DXDIAG
-Click OK
-In the DISPLAY tab check your new card and run a test

Also:

Make sure that you connected your new video card correctly in the PCIe slot. Push down on it to make sure it's properly inserted in the slot.

Finally:

If none of this works, I would look into maybe getting the new card exchanged for another one like it. It could be faulty or not working properly.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Try cleaning your PCIe slot w/ a small paintbrush then reseating the card twice. If nothing happens, your power supply might be inadequate and could not cope w/ the additional power draw of you new video card. You may have to upgrade power supply. Before doing this, test your card in another PC w/ a better power supply.

That could mean the memory on the video card is bad. If it was a power supply issue it would not even boot up the video card.

Power supply could be inadequate to run the video card. Check minimum system requirements to run the card.
