I conducted an analysis comparing pollution data and the relative "blueness" of the states.
Polution data come from:
http://www.scorecard.org/env-releases/hap/rank-states.tcl
"Blueness" came from the 2004 presidential election:
http://www.uselectionatlas.org/
I ranked the states by their pollution and their blueness, for example:
Washington, DC: 3rd in pollution, 1st in "blueness."
New York: 1st in pollution, 5th in blueness.
Wyoming: 49th in pollution, 48th in blueness.
These are significant correlations.
The biggest differences were for Vermont: 4th in blueness, 48th in pollution, and Maine: 10th in blueness, 44th in pollution.
Using equations available in any college level statistics book, I determined the correlation coefficient to be 0.58 (a coefficient of 1.0 is exact sameness, -1.0 is exact opposite, zero is "uncorrelated")
Does this explain why libs are more worried about global warming, because they live in more polluted environments?
