Well, mother-in-laws occasionally want to control their daughter-in-laws because they "took my baby boy". Most men are mammas boys anyway, so mother-in-laws want to have some control over what their son's wives are feeding them, where they're taking them, etc. Husbands get this goofy idea about controlling their wives from either their mothers or their buddies saying "Yeah man you gotta wear the pants in the family. Don't be a pushover" etc things of that nature. Some men just can't stand the idea of being controlled by a woman. They don't usually think about marriage as a partnership in which control is shared by the two individuals. Of course some men feel the need to control because of the lack of control they have in other aspects of their lives. Because of this they tend to overcompensate by being super controlling in their relationships.

Why are girls controlled after marriage?
Only because people still have the tenacity to think that women are the weaker sex and the weakness always seems to be perceived in their minds. A mother in law? It's Momma's Boy going off with that not perfect girl. She MUST be watched to make sure she does everything right...

Stand your ground. There is some weakness that they sense in you which makes them think that they can control you. Or, they may be just controlling people. You let them know from the beginning that you are not going to tell you what to do? If you set low expectations then you will be treated low. If you set high expectations and you will be treated like royalty.

The fact is, you teach people how to treat you. You need to expect to be treated with respect and dignity, and if you act like a victim, you will be a victim. Teach that you have a mind and if they say you do this or that that you don't want to do, then just say, "no, I am going to do this." REMEMBER, YOU teach people how to treat you.
