A popular misconception is that squid have eight arms and two long tentacles, while octopus have eight arms and no tentacles. But this is not always the case. The only real difference between the two groups is that squid have hooked or saw-like suckers, and octopus do not.

An octopus has a rounded body with legs radiating outward from the center, which are completely covered on the underside with suckers. A squid has a long, narrow body with the legs extending from the rear, all together. The suckers are located only at the tips of the legs. The squid also has fins projecting from the "head" end of the body which it uses to guide itself through the water.
