Level and rake the surface. I would spread an inch or two of topsoil and loosely level out with a rake. Lay your turf making sure that they have a good bond. Use a shovel to tamp turf and water it in. Make sure it is well waterd until it begins to take. Avoid walking on it for a week or two.

The hardest part is preparing the ground and best if you take time and care over this part of the job. Dig and roll the ground ensuring it is level and firm. Lay the turf like a carpet rolling it frequently. If you don't have access to a roller us a cylinder mower tipped up. Don't for get to water in dry weather until the lawn is established.

rake and level the area and lay the 1st line of a long board then flip the board onto the first line you layed repeating the process this eliminates walking on either turf or the prepeared soil

dig over.
rake to a fine texture and to also bring any debris to the surface.
tread or use a roller.
add some fertilser and rake again.
leave for up to a week to let soil settle. that way you can see any dips and rises.
rake again to level any dips or rises.
lay turf.

as long as you lay it green side up you will be ok. Roller it afterwards.
