my nose has been bleeding for a week, and the blood becomes a clot in my nose, so it feels stuffy until I blow my nose. I tried Vaseline, to keep my nose 'moist' but it's not helping.

What could the cause of this be and what can I do to stop it?

Could be high blood pressure or too much cocaine use.

You have broken a small blood vessel in your nose. I know it's hard, but the best thing to do is leave the clot where it is till it comes out naturally. Blowing it out and sticking your finger in even just to put Vaseline in it just starts the bleeding again. There are a couple of other things you can try as well - 1. Press your finger up into the notch that you feel to the side of your nose in the bony ridge just over your eye. An artery that flows through there feeds that side of the nose and you can sometimes stop the bleeding by stopping the bloodflow temporarily that way. And 2, apply ice to the nose over the spot where the bleeding is.

But if these don't stop it pretty quickly, you may need to go to your doctor. He has a topical medicine he can apply which will stop it right away. And a week is a little too long for a regular nosebleed to go on.

My Children have been through 6 surgeries in the past year for nose bleed issues.

My Husband also has issues.

The cause of a nose bleed is a broken blood vessel. It can be large or small.

You will want to keep a supply kit with you.

Do NOT blow your nose, you are just breaking the blood vessel again and not allowing it to heal.

When you get a bleed start with some Neo-Synephrine nasal spray.. it helps to constrict that blood vessels.

If that doesn't work then soak a piece of cotton in the nasal spray and keep it in your nose for about and hour.

If that fails then use nosebleed QR... my children's ENT Dr. recommends this and it works GREAT.
You can check your local pharmacy or get it on line

You want to avoid having a nasal packing AT ALL COSTS. A nose bleed can be VERY serious. My Husband had a packing and it was the most painful thing that he has ever been through. These are some pics of nasal packing's.. they go in your nose all the way up. It is pushed all the way so that none of it is hanging out (except the string)

Also, keep your nose moist with bacatracin. It will keep it moist and also heal the vessel.

You may want to see and ENT Dr if this continues. You may need to have it cauterized.

Good Luck!

that sucks. I once had a gushing, bloody nose for 2 hours. I called the doctor and they told me to just keep it pinched at the bridge of the nose, and don't blow it for quite a while. Also, it could be because your house is dry, get a humidifier and put it on in your bedroom when you sleep.

Your sinuses could be damaged. I would have a doctor check it out. Also try a saline nose spray for the time being. They could be dry.

You could have bursted a membrane. Go to the Doctor. Don't take any advice from people on the computer. No Offense. It could be serious.
