The sun is slowly expanding as a consequence of its main sequence evolution, but the earth is actually contracting, albeit very slowly, as it cools. Radioactivity sustains the earth's internal heat. As the radioactive isotopes within it decay, less heat is generated over geological time, causing the earth's interior to cool Generally speaking, when things cool, they contract.

Neither the Earth *nor* the sun is expanding. The space of our universe is expanding though.

yeah, probably according to those that agree with republicans, earth is expanding so that more people can fit in, and so that earth problems get diluted in a bigger earth volume...
