Professor Steven Hawking, probably the most intelligent living human being. He has produced many new insights and theories on the nature of the universe, particulary with relation to quantum theory and black holes. His book "A Short History of Time" was a bestseller.
Prof Hawking suffers from progressive paralysis due to Motor Neurone Disease which some years ago rendered him incapable of independent speech. He now "types" his words into a machine attached to his wheelchair which synthesises speech for him.

Hawking is a famous physicist, but he actually occupies the Lucasian Chair of Mathematics at Cambridge University, England. This is the same chair occupied by Sir Isaac Newton from 1669 to 1702, so Hawking is no slouch. He now seems to be inaudible to even his closest associates. That's why he needs the voice synthesizer to speak for him. Although Hawking definitely has a great intellect, I don't think the honor of most intelligent human being belongs to him. The last I heard, that was owned by Marilyn Vos Savant, writer extraordinaire, among other things, and wife of Dr. Robert Jarvik, the inventor of the Jarvik artificial heart. Vos Savant has a confirmed IQ of more than 210, I believe. If you have ever read her column in Parade Magazine, you can probably understand why. Her abilities in a wide variety of subjects are really quite phenomenal.
The disease which has ravaged Hawking is not Parkinson's Disease, but rather Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), better known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. Hawking was stricken with this horrific disease in 1962 while he was still a student and has essentially wasted away to nothing. Despite this, his mind remains active, and he has probably contributed more to the body of knowledge in physics since Einstein. It is really quite amazing that Hawking is still alive. I have heard of no other victim of this disease who has survived so long. He must do it through sheer force of his intellect.

professor Stephen Hawking is an astrophysycist at Cambridge university, or I should probably say The Physicist at cambridge university. He holds the Lucasian Chair, the same as Sir Isaac Newton many years past.
He is a specialist in the field of astrophysics, most notably black holes (A kind of black hole radiation is called Hawking radiation in his honour)
He also wrote a couple of popular science books, most notably "A brief history of time"
He is suffering from a disease that rids him of the use of most of his muscles. This prevents him from walking, talking and eating and moving most of his body, except for a few fingers (two, if I recall correctly). He uses those to conduct his communication with the outside world - accessing his speech synthesiser for conversation and lectures, moving on his wheelchair. His mind is working efficiently despite his appearance.

Steven Hawking is a brilliant physicist. He is able to make utterances that can be understood by those close to him, but would not be understood by most people. He usually uses a computer and text-to-speech synthesizer to communicate.

He is a famous theoretical physicist most famous for his work on black holes. He cannot talk very well but uses a computer and a mouth held mouse to talk for him. Some people can understand him but his speech is not at all clear. That used to be the case anyway. Hopefully the disease hasn't progressed.
