(96 + 89 + 90 + 85 + x)/5 = 92
(360+x)/5 = 92
5/1 = 5/1
360 + x = 92 * 5
360 + x = 460
-360 = -360
x = 100

Ok, so you have this:

96, 89, 90, 85

And you want to add another term, we will call it x, so that you receive a 92%. This is a total of 5 terms, so if you recall how to average terms, you add them all together and divide by the number of terms there are. So let's work this out:

(96 + 89 + 90 + 85 + x) / 5 = 92

(96 + 89 + 90 + 85 + x) = 460

360 + x = 460

Now you just solve for x by subtracting 360 from both sides of the equation:

360 + x - 360 = 460 - 360

x = 100

So you need a 100 % to get a 92% overall.

96+89+90+85=360
360/4=90
to have a 92% average after the next test you will need
92*5=460 points
460-360=100
you need a 100% on your next test to get a 92% average.

if "x" is the answer, then what is being said mathematically is:

(96 + 89 + 90 + 85 + x) / 5 = 92
360 + x = 5(92)
x = 460 - 360
x = 100

proof

(96 + 89 + 90 + 85 + 100) / 5 = 92

You would have to get a 100%. Do a proportion (96+89+90+85+x)/5 = 92/1
92*5=460
460-total of other side = 100.

96+89+90+85=360

92 x 5=460
460-360=100

To maintain a 92% you will need a 100% on the next test.

I think you already asked a similar question and I found that my method is the simplest if not the most elegant of the answers.

Here we are:

+4 - 3 -2 -7 = - 8 and to maintain 92 average, you need a perfect 100 out of 100 score.
