Well normally the computer itself doesn't slow down, it is the software that becomes more sophisticated, if you keep it upgraded, the new software, (ie: Vista) requires a lot more from the hardware than the software the computer came with. Trust me, if you have 5 year old computer, and you run MSDOS on it, it will be lightning fast.
Also, if you continually install questionable software, get viruses, do not turn off the computer properly with the "shutdown tabs". You will corrupt your Windows, this will cause the computer to get slow also. If you reinstall the original software for the time the computer was new, it should run at the same speed.

The performance of all the components stay the same with time. The performance decrease could be mainly due to:
1. Fragmented files in the hard drive due to the accumulated file writing/deleting processes. Regular defrag should take care of this.
2. Running out of available system RAM and using virtual memory (SLOW!) more often. This could be due to increasing number of processes running in the background and opening more applications at the same time. More RAM should take care of this. OR you could disable unnecessary processes and avoid opening multiple apps at the same time.

because you are filling up the Drive and memory with programming.. The more you have the more time it takes to process. To speed up your computer add more Ram, or delete unused or unwanted programs and defrag.
