First of all, please don't over-generalize... not EVERYONE listens to rap/hip-hop!

Typically, the first thing to draw someone to a hip-hop song is the beat. The chorus is called "the hook" because it is meant to be melodic and memorable. A part of the lyrical appeal is trying to come up with new, clever ways to say things. I know that my teenaged son and his friends like the battles when they need to improvise ways to showcase their skills and put their challenger down in order to advance to the next level.

When a new artist first starts writing songs/lyrics, they usually have had to overcome difficult obstacles from which they draw their inspiration. But once they have gained success in the industry and life becomes easy for them, all they have to write about is what their success has gained for them... material goods and easy women, along with others who either want to get a piece of their success, or who want to knock them down.

But there are hip-hop artists that actually have meaningful lyrics... unfortunately, they often do not have the same level of commercial appeal and therefore don't get the same level of exposure on radio/video channels as some of the garbage does. Check out http://www.OkayPlayer.com

I think it has the same kind of hook that heavy metal has. Don't get me wrong, i love metal, but both of them are GENERALLY viewed as negative by the elders (i.e. Parents, teachers, etc.) and many teenagers use both types of music to be different from their parents. 80's had the hair metal and the thrash metal scenes. 90's had grunge, alt. rock and the new style of rap and hip-hop, 00's has alot of death metal and hardcore rap. Rap isn't that underground. But it is WAS. Metal, in alot of ways, is underground, but in the 80's it wasn't. Metal (NOT ALL) uses Satanism, violence and ritual to rebel against people; rap uses alot of sex, language and racial stereotypes to rebel against the older society. As each generation comes, more music will come. It is just a cycle. Perhaps country will have the reputation that rap does now 3 generations in the future. Sooner or later, there will be no "new" music, just an older form of it that has been rediscovered, just wait 10-20 years (maybe even only a few years) and rap and hip-hop will dwindle. Be patient. My fellow metalheads will soon rule again.

Not everyone listens to rap. I'm sure it seems that way, but it is not.
I listen to everything...I do not prefer one music over another.
The good thing about rap is the infectious beats...the lyrics are sometimes not worth listening to, but it makes great dance music. Rap is a form of expression just like anything else...you either like it or you don't...you can take it or turn it off.

Hope this helps.

I listen to all types of music. I like some rap, if it has a good beat, or if it's catchy and makes me want to dance. If I don't like a rap song, it's probably because I think the lyrics are trashy and disrespectful, or because the beat is unoriginal.

I'm not a big rap fan either. I think some people listen to it because they can relate to it, but I couldn't tell you for the most part.

Most of it is catchy and bouncy and all the stuff. It's one of the most popular types of music right now so a lot of teenagers just go with the flow.

Personally i really don't like it..
