The WPA was a government program (federal) that provided jobs during the great depression for many unemployed men and women. Mainly they built roads, bridges, buildings, and public works projects. Many of the bridges that we still use on the old hiways are products of the WPA. They have needed replacing for 20 years but because they were so well built they keep delaying the replacement of these bridges.

But the WPA also provided money for writers, artists, photographers, and historians. Anthony Quinn (an actor from Mexico and U.S. film star) was discovered working in a WPA theater project. It also produced writers and directors as well as other artists. The WPA ceased primarily because of the war production economy for WWII.

I think the main reason is that for most of the past 40 years our country has been under the control of corrupt Republican administrations who care little about such trivial things as a deteriorating infrastructure and unemployment. It is a fact that Ronald Reagan felt a certain amount of unemployment was "good" because it tends to help control labor costs. The truth is that there is a lot more profit in building bombs than in building bridges. As long as that is the case Republicans will build bombs. It is time to start ignoring the loonies who consider such useful programs a "socialism"
