IT doesn't seem to be the alternator or battery, but I could be wrong. The battery light only came on once the car died. This is a 94' Honda Prelude. I bought it from a good dealership from a family friend. It was in great condition. Stumped as to what this could be? Thanks

Thx hsueh010- The car didn't start back up when I tried it this morning. Haven't been back out to check it since arriving to work. I was driving approx. 40 mi/hr. when the car abruptly sputtered and slowed to a complete stop.

Most common cause if the car was in motion, then all of a sudden the engine dies...

Is usually the timing belt broke. :-p

Other possibilities include:
1. Fuel pump just dies.
2. Igniter module goes out.
3. Coil has gone out.

Does the car start back up? Or do you mean that you were driving and the car suddenly died. However the car will eventually start back up after a certain amount of time? Or after the car died, it hasn't started back up again....

Continuation:
Don't know how familar you are with automotive, but take the distributor cap off the distributor. Make sure you mark wire locations on the distributor if you have to unplug wires so you can get it back together properly.

There's a rotor under the distributor cap. Try to start up the car, and see if the rotor moves. If the rotor moves, then your timing belt is fine. If the rotor doesn't move, the timing belt is highly likely broken.

the cap could have definitely been the cause, that will cause a misfire and cause the check engine light (cel) dirty battery cables really wouldnt cause the car to just shut off out of nowhere. chances are if the cap was really lose that was your problem. disconnecting the battery will cause the codes to reset so unless it comes on again you won't know what the code was.

have some one check to see if theres a spark at the sparkplugs. if not the problem may be the ignitor, or the pickup in the distrbutor. if your engine has a distributor. one mor thing, have some one listen at the fuel filler nozzle for the sound of the fuel pump. no pump no start.

check battery cables to see if they are loose, frayed or corroded and go test the battery at an autozone, they have a machine that will do this.

The battery and the fan belt system should be inspected...

Check the timing belt first and see if the belt has slipped or broke.
