A small pond is really no different than an outdoor aquarium. It still needs to have a way of circulating water and dissolved oxygen and of getting rid of excess nutrients from plants and fish.

A filter and regular cleaning (yes, you should do partial water changes on a small pond!) will help. So will growing plants - they'll absorb some of the nutrients.

If your problems is mainly mud or dead plant stems and leaves, get out as much as you can. If you've got algae, you'll need to scrape this off. Barley straw will prevent new algae from forming, but doesn't affect what's already growing. Another way to get less algae is to use floating plants (water lettuce, water hyacinth), or those with floating leaves (water lily) to keep the algae from getting as much light.

A filter is first priority. If you have fish in the pond I would suggest a pleco for algae if you live in a warm climate. Plants help keep algae blooms down by shading the water. If you get lily pads it can help. For the most part it is hard to keep an outdoor pond crystal clean. Good Luck!

Is this a lined pond or is this a water fed pond? If it is a typical water fed pond most of the "dirt" will settle , however depending on your fish. If you have koi or carp they will mud up the pond.

Secondly if it is a preform or a lined pond, you need to get it clean. All the sediment and deadleaves need to be removed.

I would suggest if getting more plants, get water lettuce or other floating plants in a preform and remember to remove them in the fall. Any other plants should be kept in containers. This will help with the oxygen in the pond.

If you have no electric running to the pond for filter use, water movement etc. this is going to be a mosquito breeding farm.
Even with fish. I would highly suggest some form of movement in the pond be it a filter or waterfall.

Unfortunately, until you get all the muck from the pond it will continue to get muddy. If it is a natural bottom pond, larger river rock will also help to keep the fish from stiring up the mud.

You definitely need a filter if there are fish in it, especially if it is overstocked. There is very little you can do though to prevent green water. It is a result of the pond being in the direct sunlight and can't be avoided other than doing a lot of water changes.

What you're experiencing is regular as 'algae bloom' - it occurs each Spring. What i have performed contained in the previous even as my pond develop into fairly grimy, develop into get in it (preferrably in fishing boots, yet tennis shoes artwork nicely), and scoop out bucket-fulls (under no circumstances better than a million/3 of the water - in the different case the fish will be too bowled over), or use your pump to pump out a million/3 of the water - stay interior of sight, do not walk away, or you'll by twist of destiny pump all of it out. yet in case you get contained in the pond, that is extra elementary to snatch the clumps of algae (positioned on rubber gloves) and toss them out. Then upload sparkling water, and voila!, each little thing's sparkling and pleasing back. you could also upload water lilies or perhaps as their leaves spread out and cover the exterior of the pond, you've a lot less algae enhance.

You need to add a filter and maybe a skimmer as well. The filter will get anything floating in the water. The skimmer will get what ever is floating on the water.

i do not know the answer to this, but you used the incorrect form of "there" in your question. you said "..is their and thing.." and i believe you meant "is there anything..."

just fyi.

oh, and you should probably get a filter since there is nothing to keep dirt, etc out of the pond.

get some barley straw (think its called that) and put it in for a little while, it soaks up all the algae and keeps it clear :)
