Combine terms = 4 - (2 + 3m) + 6m + 9

The back of the book shows the answer = 3m +11

But I am getting the answer = 9m + 11

Can someone work the problem out with the correct steps so I can see the right steps to take when solving this type of problem?

4 - (2 + 3m) + 6m + 9

4 - 2 -3m + 6m + 9

3m + 11

The minus side outside the parentheses applies to both the 2 and the 3m.

You have a subtraction before the (2 + 3m), so the minus sign has to be carried through. Remember subtracting a positive is the same as adding a negative, so you have:
4 - (2 + 3m) + 6m + 9
4 + -(2 + 3m) + 6m + 9
4 + -2 + -3m + 6m + 9

From here, we can just combine like terms two at a time:
(4 + -2) + -3m + 6m + 9
2 + -3m + 6m + 9
11 + -3m + 6m
11 + 3m
which is the same as 3m + 11

you have to distribute the - on the outside to both the 2 and the 3m to make them both negative. Then when you combine 4 - 2+9 you get 11 and 6m-3m = 3m

so 3m +11 is your answer

the trick is that there is a minus sign in from of the brackets. In maths you calculate anything in brackets first, so when you remove the brackets to combine everything then you have to change the sign of all the terms within the brackets.

so
4 -(2+3m) +6m +9 becomes

4 -2 -3m +6m +9

u know how this works............its easy....
I) 1st multiply (-) with the terms in the bracket that is....
- * (2+3m)....which gives = -2-3m
II) now 4 - 2 - 3m + 6m + 9...which gives = 2 + 3m +9 = 3m+11

Specifically, -(2 + 3m) = (-1)(2 + 3m) = -2 - 3m.
[Each term within the parentheses is multiplied by (-1).]

You're getting 9m because you are not distributing the minus sign thoughout the numbers that are in the parentheses.
