Hey Fou-Fou: A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway fits both of your requirements in addition to being an anti-war book. The End of the Affair is a good choice too as noted above; look for the deep religious overtones that are in all of Geene's books.

The Skye O'Malley series by Bertrice Small! I have read everyone of them and cried over them all! They are AMAZING! A little racy at times, but the stories are unbelieveably good! All her books are great, actually!
