*IF* they can control enough of the labor supply, they can control "supply" in the supply-demand curve classic to economics. This would let some work, and get more pay, while others would be free to do whatever else.

Those hiring have a vested interest in getting everyone to compete to the detriment of wages. Unions may also try to increase the quality of labor, to justify higher wages.

The AMA apparently does not consider itself a labor union, but seems to be organizing a collective negotiation effort on behalf of its members vesus Health Maintenance Organizations.
