The Soviet Union spent 9 years in a war in Afghanistan.. was bled dry from this.. then collapsed 2 years later.

With the speed at which we are spending in Iraq.. should we look at history and think for a moment so as to not repeat the mistakes of others?

The debacle in Afghanistan did contribute to the fall of the Soviety Union, but it wasn't the clear cause. The accellerated arms race with the US in the Regan years, and the long slow decline brought on by an inefficient command econmy, also had a lot to do with it.

Osama fought in Afganistan, and he thinks Islamists can take credit for the collapse of Soviet Union, with some justification. Now Islamists can go two for two. I don't think the United States will collapse, but Iraq is lost and it will be very damaging for us.

That would be an accurate comparison if it weren't for 2 things..

Vietnam compares better to Afghanistan and the U.S. ddin't break because of thjat war.

The economy has been in a period of unprecidented growth despite two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

so your blaming the fall of USSR on afghanistan- well what about the cold war- what about the true economics of a communist society. I am afraid that you are comparing apples with oranges.

Look at the GDP of The USSR before the fall - look at it in comparison of ours now- there can be no logical comparison.

No - not so much. Our nation always had a much stronger economy that the Soviet Union.
Of course if we continue to pay for it by borrowing instead of taxes, we could put a definite dent in that economy, so who knows?

Has everything to do with the weapons, and wmd in
al qaeda's hands... By not handling Iraq, we are leaving ourselves open to attack... Right now Chavez is allowing al qaeda to train on Margarita Island and teaching them to pass as Latino over our borders, So yea, unless the Democrats want to force us once again to fight for the Independence of our Nation against foreign leaders, we had better handle it NOW.
