I love Crime and Punishment. Preferred Tolstoy's Anna Karenina to War and Peace.

Russian literature is wonderful. Tolstoy's "War and Peace" is obviously a classic. I read it in high school and again in college. Loved it from beginning to end. I also read "The Mother" in college. Gorky is probably one of the most underrated Russain novelists. When we think of Russian authors, most of us think of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. Few people have ever heard of Gorky. I thought "The Mother" was a brilliant piece of work. I also read the play that is based on it. Not quite as gripping as the novel but good nonetheless. I read "Crime and Punishment" in high school. Dostoevsky is, without a doubt, my favorite Russian author. If you liked C&P, I would recommend "The Brothers Karamazov" and "Notes from Underground."

Happy reading!!!

I've read War and Peace ... one of those classic books that you should read, then go back and read the first hundred pages again, because it can really make no sense at the very beginning. There are too many characters and all of the names are changed to Russian nicknames, that sometimes seem unrelated ... ex: Alexander can be used and then the nick name, Sasha .. but of course, Sasha is also the nick name for Alexandria as well, so who knows who they are talking about? So you have to go back and start the whole thing all over again.

I've also read Dostoevsky and I love his writing. It's dark and heavy and one can feel the guilt building in the character. I enjoyed the Brothers Karamazov a lot more, it's one of my most favorite books ever.

Well I read Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky. I liked it enough to pick up another book by him.

i just read Crime & Punishment - I felt like I was being punished. Why that book is considered a classic piece of literature, I will never know. It was long, drawn out, boring, preachy, poorly written. I actually threw the book in the trash when I was done reading it.
