3. Is this a function? Why or why not?

{(1, 3), (2, 4), (3, 5), (4, 7)}

A It is not a function because 4 + 2 is not equal to 7.

B It is not a function because (0, 0) is not included in the set of points.

C It is not a function because the domain is not equal to the range. .

D It is a function because all of the numbers are positive.

E It is a function because each y-value maps to only one x-value.

F It is a function because each x-value maps to only one y-value.

F) It is a function because each x-value maps to only one y-value.

A set of ordered pairs like this can always be called a relation. In the event that the relation does not map any x-value to more than one y-value, it can also be called a function. However, it is important to establish that {1, 2, 3, 4} is the complete domain of the relation. If the relation has other members in its domain but they are not mapped onto values in the codomain, this would fail to be a function for a reason different than any of those given.

Simply put, F is the answer.

All a function does is a mapping from one object (in the domain) to exactly one object (in the image). It is possible for 2 different objects in the domain to map to the same object in the image.

Because this problem did not specify what the domain and image were, then all you would have to make sure is that for every element x in the domain, x only maps to one element.

Example that is not a function: { (1,5), (1,6), (2,7) }
