Buttoning the top button is a look you may choose or not. Leaving the button open is also a choice. Neither is more or appropriate. Leaving the top button open is a more relaxed look. Buttoning the top button however is decidedly geeky. Your choice, depending on the look you like.

Sure, you CAN button every button...but why would you want to?
I say wear a nice golf shirt like this:
a new white tee under, and leave the first button undone...maybe the second one too.

golf shirts are supposed to look "nice-casual" so you don't want to have it buttoned up tight!
