having lived here ( St Thomas) 35 years:
it's just like everywhere else...some parts are safe, some parts not......being only 3 x 12 miles, the safe and not safe areas are closer together than in a big city, but if you use common sense, dont flash money, dont go wandeering down the street with a head full of liquor at 2 AM you'll be fine.........trust your instincts......if you drive thru an area and say to yoruself this doesnt look good.well. keep on going...a half mile down the road is an area that will knock your socks off.....

The US Virgin islands are mostly safe. You will have your petty crimes just like any other place in todays world. You need to take certain precautions. Don't flash money or jewelry, be aware of your surroundings at all times especially at night and most of all mind your manners. Your hotel concierge will give you a heads up where it is safe to walk at night.
I remember one time we wanted to walk to a certain restaurant at night and they told us, no it's not safe take the hotel van and a taxi back to the hotel. The thieves can spot the tourists right away. My advise is ask the locals if it's safe to go to certain parts of the island. Enjoy)

I was only there in the day time, but it was really nice. I wouldn't do anything stupid, but it's just as safe as the average city in the US, just smaller.
